2015 MUSIC

TAMECA JONES

TamecaJonesMusic
When local Austin, TX native Tameca Jones opens her mouth and sings, jaws hit ground. Souls are searched and stirred. She started melting faces in 2005 when she joined Austin based band 8 Million Stories and performed her original music. A few years later, the band called it quits, which left Tameca without someone to help her create. So, she turned to covers to continue playing, grow her audience, and pay the bills.
“I really trusted my taste level. I figured if I built it they would come. And they did.”
Tameca spent years skillfully and tastefully breathing new life into the music of others. She made a name for herself as the “Queen of Austin Soul,” blowing minds with her tasteful and vibrant interpretations of a diverse list of artists that include Tina Turner, Nirvana, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, and more. Her WTF ability to go from soulful wailing to honeyed coos has won her devoted fans, accolades, and some high profile situations opening for Austin super stars Gary Clark Jr., Max Frost, Bob Schneider and other big touring acts. She recently received major love from Billboard Magazine for her white hot performance at the 2015 Austin Music Awards where she paid tribute to late beloved musician Ian McLagan alongside legends like Steven Van Zandt, Charlie Sexton, Alejandro Escovedo, and Patty Griffin. Billboard said she “raised the roof,” while the Austin Chronicle called her performance “showstopping.”
“I never want to do something half way. I never phone in a performance. If I don’t feel what I’m singing, I feel like a fraud. If I’m not exhausted after a show, I haven’t done my job. I want to people’s blown minds to ooze out of their ears after I’m done.”
So many great bands and artists started out covering other people’s music—Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Amy Winehouse to name a few. Tameca has been stewing in the delectable goodness of other people’s music for seven years. So you KNOW she’s about to drop something tasty. Her raw and fierce vocals, along with her choice taste of covers, have won her accolades, thousands of fans, and respect from the industry. Gary Clark Jr. recently enlisted her to sing on a track for his upcoming second studio album. She’s ready to take off the covers and expose who she is as an original artist.
Tameca is partnering with some very respected Texas musicians for her highly anticipated debut EP of originals set to drop in the late fall. The EP’s first single, “Hot and Bothered,” is a Motown inspired cut Tameca wrote about a crush. Tameca’s album will be a patchwork of all of her influences from her career tricking out covers. She is also slated to play the 2nd weekend of ACL Fest. Soon the world will know what Austin, TX has known for some time—that Tameca Jones is a lit cigarette at a gas station about to blow up!
