My Valentine's Wish List

With Valentine's Day around the corner, I thought I would share some of my "foodie" Valentine's Day wish list...

To Eat:
It was love at first sight when I spotted Katrina's Vosges Truffles at Fox & Obel nearly 10 years ago. Black Pearl and Naga stole my heart with each bite, as my taste buds began to travel and taste the world. The below is the Exotic Truffle Collection featuring some my favorites.

To Do:

A Master Cooking Class with Paul Kahan?  Or learn to make a stellar dessert with my fave pastry chefs, Dana Cree & Anna Shovers?
I would DIE and this would be the ultimate gift of 2014 because all the series are sold out! #Priceless

Master Cooking Class Lineup

February 23, 2014- Blackbird: Chef de Cuisine David Posey

$300- 3/30; 12/7

Each class offers the rare opportunity to learn directly from the pros, all with a drink in hand. Classes begin at 7:00pm and space is limited to 12 pupils per evening, making for a truly intimate affair. Contact Deanna Devries at 312.496.0012, or deanna@publicanqualitymeats.com to reserve your spot.
For my kitchen:
We all want a kitchen upgrade.  If I were to remodel, the first thing on my list would be adding a farmhouse sink.  I hate dealing with the stupid divider between the disposal and drain making it terribly inefficient to do dishes and clean.  Furthermore, with a my commercial style Grohe faucet (here), the water is always deflecting and spraying everywhere.
The only decision would be choosing between a stainless steel or vintage white sink!  Which would you choose?

To Read:

I collect Phadion cookbooks. I have been lucky to occassionally find a couple of them at Costco at a great bargain, or Gilt and One Kings Lane offers sales on them often.  I highly recommend any of them.

Another set of cookbooks that any chef would recommend (and I would love to have), is the "Cook's Books" set by Juniper Books.

This set of 5 books includes:

1. The Essential New York Times Cookbook: Classic Recipes for a New Century by Amanda Hesser
2. James Beard's American Cookery
3. Joy of Cooking, 75th Anniversary Edition
4. Gourmet Today by Ruth Reichl
5. Cook's Illustrated Cookbook by America's Test Kitchen

The titles and authors are cleverly integrated into the design of the letters that spell out “Cook’s Books.”  Custom versions of this product (alternate colors, different cookbook titles, etc.) may be requested and a special price will be quoted. I would love the "Cook's Books" set by  Juniper Books but it's $295. #splurge

To drink:

As a big tea drinker, I am sick of my big mugs and want to enjoy my tea like a lady with a fancy tea set.  I would love to have a tea party with this Hermes  set (top) but Antropologie(bottom) will do. It would be great to fill this tea set with the amazing tea from Rare Tea Cellars.  I need tea addicts anonymous for  Rare Tea Cellar's Gingerbread Dream Rooibos.

Wishing you a very Happy Valentine's Day! XO Kat

Back to School Pilot Light Block Party at PQM

I kicked off my weekend by attending the “Back to School Block Party”, benefiting Pilot Light at
Publican Quality Meats (PQM). The Pilot Light chefs cooked up a very special evening featuring innovative food and drink. The night included a DJ, and I rocked out to 80s jams, as well as a silent and live auction offering unbelievable prizes. I had a great evening supporting Pilot Light's unique vision to empower children to make healthy choices, by integrating culinary education with school standards, curriculum and culture.

About Pilot Light
Inspired by Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move, Chefs Move to Schools' campaign, Pilot Light enlists the city's top chefs and Chicago Public Schools teachers to incorporate culinary education and nutrition into existing core curricula. Pilot Light's incubator program at the Disney II Magnet School includes chefs and teachers collaborating to develop lesson plans and facilitate thoughtful discussion about food as it relates to literacy, math, social studies and science. Sample lessons include 'Access to Food as a Civil Right' (4th grade social studies), and 'Noodles to Neighborhoods' - teaching cultural diversity through pasta (3rd grade social studies). Classroom discussions culminate in a healthy, chef-produced lunch.

Board members include chefs Paul Kahan, Matthias Merges, Jason Hammel, Ryan Poli and Justin Large, as well as Principal Bogdana Chkoumbova, and education consultants Brooke Stafford-Brizard and Shari Berland. For more information please visit www.pilotlightchefs.org
